BMW X1 sDrive 20d xLine Review

Everytime people come across a dual kidney shape grilled car on road, they know its a BMW. With a brand so matured and efficient with the products, every new release raises the anticipation quotient as some of them turn out to be gamechangers in the automobile industry. The BMW X1 has entered the compact crossover SUV segment. After the response for its debut concept version at Paris Motor Show in 2008, BMW X1 launched two variants namely,  sDrive (Rear-wheel drive) and xDrive (all wheel drive). The CKD mode helped it cut down costs suiting the customers to some extent.

Exterior

With evolving designs, the SUVs also changed over the years for facilitating the needs of diverse customers. The compact crossover segment has few cars that are aesthetically pleasing. The X1 comes with striking exteriors that sport the traditional long front hood and sporty rear end and standard 17-inch alloy wheels. The exteriors feature aerodynamic details as well as compactness and sturdiness that gives the SUV a complete look. The rear boot door has a squeezed in resemblance. The tail lamps are distributed between the D Pillar as well as the rear door itself. The rear windshield is tilted, avoiding the wagon look that most SUV's unfortunately get trapped into. The leaf shaped side windows, amazingly large sunroof and hofmeister kink give an open feel as they extend almost till the rear windshield. BMW X1 sDrive 20d xLine  features a shark fin antenna, placed aptly to reduce the aerodynamic friction. The roof spoiler completes the rear design perfectly. The wheelbase is long and there are comparatively short overhangs. The X1 has its rising lateral lines with striking side sills which give a dynamic feel to the vehicle. The front is redesigned except for the signature upright kidney grille, double round headlights. The headlamps use LED technology and X1 also features chorme elements that give a striking form with LED accent lights and fog lights decorating the vehicle for the night hours.

Interior

Its not about the destination, its about the journey. But it is not just about the journey, its the way journey is made. BMW offers interiors that help improve the journey as an experience by offering good ambiance, which the company claims, cannot be matched with. Down to the last corner, the detailing offered is really worth appraisal. The perfectly matched upholstery colours and materials reflect the efforts the company made towards developing them. The interiors were versatile in terms of the inclination options available and the seat structuring in specific proportions and angles, ensuring the passengers wouldn't feel the strain despite hours of travelling that the X1 smoothly offers. The SUV also provides good ventilation with a lot of open spaces around the side glasses as well as large sunroof helping riders enjoy the weather in the SUV itself. The steering wheel features telephonic call controls. The xLine has its exclusive Sport leather steering wheel, velour floor mats that have a contrasting border and fine-wood trim fine line bay matt that complements the seating style. The tachometer has dual meters and an LED screen informing the driver about fuel status, etc., during drive. The paddle shifters are also aptly placed without crowding the steering space for traditional drivers. A large screen space is provided in the middle of dashboard for GPS navigation and optional BMW Apps on high resolution display.

Engine

The BMW X1 sDrive 20d xLine features a 1995cc engine with 4 cylinders that is capable of 0-100 kmph in a reported 7.9 seconds . The mileage offered by the SUV is a decent 17 kmpl. The X1 sDrive xLine comes with an 8-speed automatic Steptronic transmission, which helps the vehicle shift seamlessly from one gear to the other. The X1 xLine offers the BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine making for outstanding driving pleasure. The turbochargers help the engine unleash a massive 380Nm of torque at 1,750-2,750 rpm and a top speed of 205 km/h. The auto start stop function in the BMW X1 also helps reduce the fuel consumption and successive emissions by turning off the engine once optimum internal temperature is reached. This feature helps improve the SUV a lot on city roads where unnecessarily excess fuel is consumed. Since the engine starts back immediately after releasing the brake, user wouldn't feel the delay at all. The electric power steering is activated only when it is turned, which means that on long straight rides, the steering doesn't consume power. And when it does, it used the regenerated power from the braking system .

Braking & Handling

Brake energy regeneration is another amazing effort by BMW as it doesn't let even the braking system to go unused. This intelligent system helps store charge for future purposes reducing the load faced by the engine. This is used by the EPS when available. The handling is superior due to an intelligent function that utilises engine and fuel only when needed and only till the level they are needed, helping them run for a long time. As an anonymous auto enthusiast once mentioned, “Respect the car and the car respects you”. BMW, in this regard, did a wonderful job. The SUV has an option to select the driving mode so that accordingly the features and utilisation ratios of resources change. The temperature, fuel efficiency, engine performance are altered based on user requirement. The 8-speed automatic transmission is designed by altering the gears at small revolution gaps so that sudden change of gears wouldn't sabotage the driving experience.

Comfort Features

BMW X1 sDrive 20d xLine can get as comfortable as the driver chooses it to be. Options of seating, ambient lightning through open design, decent mileage and smart functioning all in all make X1 a strong choice when comfort is a parameter. Though a compact crossover by name, there is nothing cramped or small about the interiors the boot is large enough to fit family luggages and the rear seats have ample leg room.

Safety Features

With the standard ABS, Pyrotechnic belt tensioners and belt force limiters and side impact protection , BMW gave special notice to the safety features. The SUV also features a runflat tyre indicator to avoid much havoc on uneven paths.

Pros

Highly innovative technological specs, BMW Apps, good pick up

Cons

High Cost, comparatively less cargo space.
