Following the unveiling of XC90 R-Design quite recently, Volvo has now announced a powertrain upgrade for its V40 Cross Country. The car will soon be available with a T5 Drive-E engine and an AWD (all-wheel drive) system.

Speaking about the upgrades, Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Cars, said “Volvo Cars is continuing to evolve the V40 Cross Country with this powertrain upgrade. The combination of the Drive-E T5 engine with AWD will give adventurous customers the power to explore, and all the control they need to be confident in all road conditions.”

The AWD system is exclusively available with a revised Drive-E T5 turbo petrol engine, that belongs to the brand's recently-introduced Drive-E modular engine family, promising cleaner and more efficient running than ever before. Opting for this new 4-cylinder unit, instead of earlier five-cylinder mill, has resulted into an output drop from 254 to 245 PS, while the torque now stands at 350 Nm as compared to 360 Nm before.

The Swedish carmaker has also replaced the six-speed manual gearbox with a new eight-speed autobox with paddles on the steering wheel for manual gear shifting. This isn't all, with all these tweaks, the V40 Cross Country has now become the cleanest car in its segment. Its emissions now stands at only 148 g/km, as against the Audi Q3 TFSI Quattro's 179 g/km, the BMW X1 xDrive28i xLine's 171-168 g/km or the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4Matic's 151 g/km.
