Japanese automaker Toyota on Tuesday issued a statement stating the deliveries of 5.02 million vehicles in the first of the on-going year, trailing the 5.04 million vehicles its closest competitor Volkswagen reported earlier this month. Though sales for both the brands have seen slump during the tenure- Toyota posted 1.5 per cent while the German carmaker registered marginal 0.5 per cent down.

General Motors, the third-biggest automaker by volume, have also seen 1.2 percent decline in the first half of the year to 4.86 million vehicles.

Despite of slowdown in China, its biggest market, Volkswagen has been benefited with the increased demand in European market during the past few years. Marching towards the target of becoming the world’s largest automaker by 2018, which it had announced way back in 2007, Volkswagen will have to withstand the downfall brought about by China’s volatile stock market and locally manufactured cheap competition.

Last year, Toyota sold 10.23 million vehicles against the 10.14 million of Volkswagen and 9.92 million of General Motors.
