It may come as a surprise but Maruti Suzuki Alto is no more India's largest selling car atleast for the May month. Even more, the hatch is not only toppled from the first position but has been pushed to third position. The first spot is acquired by the compact sedan Swift DZire while on the second position is company's another car, the premium hatch Swift. Downfall of Alto, which is half the price of DZire, suggests the growing demand of expensive compact sedans.

Alto has maintained its apex position for more than two-decades and its surprising to see that in its twenty years of dominance, its the first time when the company's entry level hatch has been shifted from top position to third position. For the month of May, the automaker sold 18,953 units of DZire and 17,936 units of Swift as compared to 17,311 units of Alto.

Swift DZire

Maruti Suzuki, targeting the large Indian middle class family has priced its Alto quite competitively and even the Swift & Dzire are aptly positioned. In the capital city, Alto comes in the range of Rs 2.37 lakh to Rs 3.52 lakh, Swift falls in the price range of Rs 4.42 lakh to Rs 6.70 lakh while Swift Dzire is priced between Rs 4.85 lakh to Rs 7.32 lakh. Offered with some of the class leading features like automatic climatic control, steering mounted controls, Maruti Suzuki Swift & Dzire instantly became hit with long waiting periods that still prevail even after half a decade of their launch.

A senior executive said that irrespective of the badge, all the top four best selling cars in India are from the Maruti Suzuki stable. He further added, "It's the right strategy and DZire is proving that. Customers are upgrading to bigger cars and this is the reason why DZire and Swift have emerged as such strong products," the executive added.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire has crafted a whole new segment and many car-makers have tried to follow the path of Maruti. Honda, the Japanese manufacturer has launched the Amaze while Hyundai introduced its latest entrant Xcent. As seen in the last fiscal year, the compact sedan segment rose upto 4 percent even when the entire auto industry witnessed a fall of 5 percent.

Moreover, the fourth position is also acquired by the Maruti Suzuki car and its none another than the tall boy WagonR as the company retailed 11,757 units in the month of May. While the AMT sensation Celerio is also catching up but due to its huge waiting period (five to six months) the car is suffering to attract new buyers. In May, the manufacturer managed to retail 5858 units of Celerio.
