The homegrown manufacturer Tata Motors is planning to double its dealer network in country by the year 2020. After expanding its dealer network in metro and major cities, the automaker now looks to target small cities and rural areas. Till now, Tata Motors has around 500 touch points across the country and is planning to expand its reach in coming years.

Mayank Pareek, Tata Motor's President for Passenger Vehicle Business said, "India is a hugely diverse country. There are around 6.5 lac villages, 3,000 towns with a population of more than 50,000 people and over 3,800 tehsils. We are trying to go as much near to the customers." He also added that the company is expanding the network across the length and width of the country.

For Tata Motors, rural sales accounts for around 15 per cent of the total sales while for other carmakers, rural market accounts for about 30 per cent of the total retail.

"By 2020 the passenger car market will touch 5 million units per annum mark. It will double from the current 2.5 million market. So, looking at that we also need to at least double our network by then," Pareek said.

Tata Motors is not only expanding its dealers network, but is also working on expanding its model lineup. The automaker will soon launch the Bolt hatch which will lock horns with Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10. The carmaker is also testing its new Kite hatch and Kite sedan. The hatch will replace the Indica while the sedan will replace the Indigo eCS.
