Suzuki ‘YRA’ (codenamed)- the premium hatch that would be placed above Swift is making quite a buzz lately. The clear spyshots of the vehicle are roaming around the net. The hatch will compete with Elite i20, Polo, Punto EVO, Bolt as its main rivals. About the launch, the vehicle is set to launch at some major expo next year while Indian launch is expected sometime next year or early 2016.

On the design front, vehicle shares facial similarities with the Swift, specially if you look at the headlight! While rear is new territory not seen on Suzuki before, and like the Ciaz it looks European. Adding on the features, expect similar features like the Ciaz - SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system, auto AC, push-button engine start-stop, etc. Moreover, Maruti could standardize some safety features on ‘YRA’ looking at the recent Global NCAP crash test criticism of Swift!

Speaking of the engine, as this is a premium offering and would be placed above Swift expect Ciaz’s powertrains making their way under the hood of ‘YRA’. Starting with the diesel, DDiS200 with variable geometry turbo chucks out 88.5 bhp @ 4000 rpm and a max torque of 200 Nm pops out at 1750 rpm (the engine nomenclature is also derived from how much torque it generates). Like the Ciaz, diesel YRA will mated to a five-speed manual unit.

Petrol engine is likely to be the same as of Swift's to save few bucks (sub-4m petrol car with engine displacement under 1.2-liters saves 12 per cent tax benefit). The 1.2-liter K-series motor with variable valve timing produces 83.2 bhp @ 6000 rpm and a max torque of 190 Nm generated at 2000 rpm.

However, Suzuki UK has also revealed a new Dual-Jet technology equipped version of this 1.2L 4-pot motor which will go on sale in Europe early next year in Swift. This motor could also be equipped in the ‘YRA’ hatch in India. With the Dual-Jet technology, the same 1.2-liter motor produces 88.8 bhp and 120 Nm of peak torque at 4000 rpm. The engine will be mated to a five-speed manual box, expect an automatic too. If it gets the Dual-Jet technology, then it is likely to be the first vehicle in India from Maruti to debut this technology.
