Quick Comparison: Hyundai 4S Verna vs. Honda City vs. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

Hyundai today launched the refreshed Verna in India. The 4S Fluidic Verna, as the South Korean manufacturer calls it, is not a new generation model but the same Verna with some much-needed updates.

The Verna first came to India in 2011, and has been ruling the mid-size sedan segment since then. But with the growing competition, especially after the arrival of Honda City Diesel and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, the sedan somewhere lost its ground, and this refreshment comes as an attempt to regain its diminishing charm back.

So, now armed with a slightly new look and a plethora of new features, let’s see how the 4S Fluidic Verna stacks up against its prime competitors- Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

Design:

In terms of looks, more of a subjective topic, the 4S Verna is the most innovative looking car of the lot. It now flaunts a redesigned front fascia that features a new twin-slat grille, redesigned bumper, elongated headlamps with projector lights and a new set of fog lamps. On the other side, its competitors- City as well as the Ciaz looks more subtle and cleaner. So, if you are more of an analogue person, the Verna might not be your taste and vice-versa.

In terms of size, the new Verna remains relatively unchanged, though, remains equivalent the City as well, which boasts almost identical dimensions. Thus, the Ciaz still remains the longest in overall length and wheelbase.

Features:

Like any other Hyundai, Verna was never really short on features and with the launch of the facelift, the gap has even increased. Except the rear AC vents, it doesn’t misses any other equipment you can think of. It gets some class-leading features such as automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, cooled glove-box, six airbags to name a few. Apart from that all three cars get all the essential features such as engine start/stop, keyless entry, rear camera. Therefore, Verna arrives as true winner in the features department.

Performance:

Hyundai is the only manufacturer in this segment to offer two engine options, namely the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel units. When compared, the Hyundai Verna’s higher variants equipped with 1.6-litre mills, both petrol and diesel, stands ahead of both its competitors, in terms of power as well as torque. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz stays as the least powerful car of the three.

Worth Buying?

The Verna, since inception, has always been criticised for its performance on the highway due to vague steering and an extremely light suspension setup at the rear, but in this newest avatar, Hyundai has tried its level best to address this and almost all the major issues that the old model faced. Therefore, with stiffened suspension, heavier steering and updated design along with most powerful petrol and diesel engines in the segment, the Verna has again become a major consideration for buyers in this segment.
