Mercedes to Invest Rs 1000 Crore in India, Eyes Rapid Expansion

Mercedes Benz has joined the “Make in India” bandwagon by announcing an investment of Rs 1,000 crore on Monday and there are plans for the expansion of their Chakan plant at Pune.

An official said the announcement comes after an important meeting held between Mr. Devendra Fadnavis (Chief Minister for Maharashtra), Eberhard Kern (MD & CEO of Mercedes Benz India), and Roland Folger (future MD and CEO of the company), on Monday. Mr. Fadnavis assured full support for the plan while Mercedes Benz expressed their willingness to contribute for the successful ‘Jalyukt Shivar Scheme’ of the state government. This is the state's flagship water conservation cum Integrated water management scheme and aims to make Maharashtra a drought-free state by 2019.

The announcement comes in as a follow-up to the joyous declaration made last month that the Mercedes-Maybach S500 will be produced from the Chakan layout. The carmaker is also delivering C, E, S, M, GL, GLA, CLA models from India making it the second country after Germany where the Mercedes-Maybach S500 will be produced. This car will be the most luxurious and expensive vehicle of the company that will be produced locally for the Indian market.
