Maruti Suzuki will use Manesar facility for automobile assembly while Gurgaon plant will be a base for engine assembly and machining. Both the changes will be made in a phased manner, according to company’s statement. Nevertheless, it did not disclose the name of the car models. It may be noted that Gurgaon facility manufactures mainly Maruti 800, Maruti Omni, Maruti Versa and Maruti Gypsy. On the other hand, Maruti A-Star, Maruti SX4, Maruti Swift and Maruti Swift DZiRE are produced at Manser plant. The production capacities of both the plants are 6.2 lakh and 3 lakh units a year, respectively. The decision to shift production was taken during Suzuki Motor Corp's Chairman and Suzuki's CEO visit to India to attend MSI's annual general meeting, it said. MSI had scaled up its overall production capacity to one million units this year from the two facilities at Gurgaon and Manesar. The Gurgaon Plant was constructed in early 1970's and had been refurbished and modified before Maruti Udyog began production in 1983.
