Land Rover has confirmed that the first member of the all-new Discovery family will be the Discovery Sport premium compact SUV. This will replace the existing Freelander 2. The British marquee had anyways announced that the Freelander 2 will be merged with the Discovery family and this will all be a part of this same team.

Land Rover will divide its products into three families— Range Rover, Discovery and Defender. The Range Rover family is complete with the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Long Wheelbase. The Discovery has already got the Discovery Sport coming up. Next family is the Defender, which at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show was announced, to be launched in 2015. Hence, the upcoming year will be exciting for Land Rover with several launches lined-up.

The new Discovery Vision Concept unveiled at the New York Motor Show offers a window into the advanced research projects which are underway at Jaguar Land Rover. They illustrate how future Land Rovers could evolve, and the direction of development of technology geared towards the needs of the customers of the future. These include:

§  Next-generation Human-Machine Interface (HMI) technology creates a rich and truly immersive multimedia experience for all occupants, including video calls between passengers through the seatback infotainment screens, Smart Glass bringing the power of augmented reality to the entire glasshouse, and various functions, including the doors, indicators, headlamps and seatback screens, operated by Gesture Control.

§  Remote Control Drive enables the driver to manoeuvre the car at very low speed while not actually seated inside it. Remote Control Drive has various useful applications both on- and off-road, from coupling a trailer, to external spotting during extreme off-roading.

§  Visibility is greatly enhanced in all conditions with the powerful, day-like light of the laser headlamps, which feature intelligent object tracking and beam-dipping to improve driver safety.

§  Navigating tight gaps is made easy with the visual assistance of Laser Referencing, which utilises visible lasers to project markings, symbols  and imagery onto ground surfaces.

The announcement was made by Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, during his speech at the 2014 New York International Auto Show:

"I am proud to confirm the nameplate that will make Discovery a family of vehicles for the first time. It will be called Discovery Sport and will go on sale in 2015. This will be the most versatile and capable SUV in its segment and is the first expression of the Discovery Vision Concept unveiled here in New York."
