Tata-owned Land Rover has officially confirmed the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible, prototypes for which have been spying for quite a while now. The company has released a teaser video having a camouflaged prototype of the same doing test runs in the underground Crossrail tunnels of London.

According to Land Rover, the location was chosen because of its privacy and this is the first and only car to ever do so. The 42-km network of Crossrail tunnels is located 40 meters below the city of London, therefore it allowed engineers to drive the disguised Evoque Convertible with its roof lowered without worrying about spy photographers.

“The tunnels are still under construction, so we had a unique opportunity to explore the vehicle's all-terrain ability in unchartered territory,” explains Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes.

The concept version of this open-top Evoque was rolled out almost two years back and was well-received even then. This production-ready avatar is almost similar to that concept, featuring a folding soft-top roof design. But one new element that was not there on the concept is a small wing spoiler at the rear.

Range Rover Evoque Convertible will go on sale in 2016, stated the company, while complete details about the vehicle will be announced later this year. This new model will be manufactured at Land Rover’s Halewood plant in the UK alongside the already available five door and coupe Evoque, which recently received an update. The new Evoque comes with few visual tweaks and a new diesel engine for markets where the option is offered (like India).
