India's second-largest car manufacturer, Hyundai is all set to improve its small car portfolio by launching a series of new models in the country to take on Maruti Suzuki India. DNA reported that the South Korean automaker is planning to launch new Eon 1.1-litre, which will be positioned against Maruti Alto K10.

Speaking to DNA, Person closer to the development said that “Eon competes with the entry-level Alto (now Alto 800), but does not have a product that competes directly with Alto K10. The company may introduce the new Eon with 1.1L engine, which is currently being used in Santro Xing".

It is expected that Hyundai will launch three compact cars in India within a year time, the all-new global hatchback Grand i10, Eon 1.1-litre and the next-generation i20 next year. We reported earlier that the company is also planning to launch a compact sedan based on Grand i10, which will compete against Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze, a compact SUV against EcoSport and Duster, and a compact MPV to rival Ertiga and Enjoy.

In the last fiscal, Maruti Suzuki India sold around 20,000 units of Alto every month, while Eon sells around 7,000-8,000 units/ month on an average. Yesterday, Hyundai Motor India revealed its much-anticipated compact car Grand i10, which is scheduled to be launched in September this year. This will compete against the likes of Maruti Swift, Ford Figo, Nissan Micra and few others. Grand i10 is a completely new car, and will sit between the regular i10 and i20. It will come with two engine options- 1.1-litre U2 diesel and 1.2-litre Kappa petrol.
