Dr Pawan Goenka gets new responsibility: Appointed as Chairman of Board of Governors at IIT Madras

Honourable President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee appointed Dr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., as the Chairman of Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Dr Goenka will hold the office for a period of 3 years with effect from 9th June, 2014.
Dr. Goenka as the Chairman of the Board of Governors, will advise Board of Governors and senior IIT-M management on different issues concerning the development of the institute. He will also preside over all the Board meetings which helps in promoting and boosting the priorities of the IIT Madras. Dr Goenka will take over as Chairman from Prof. M.M. Sharma, Padma Vibhushan, member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Prime Minister. With this appointment, Dr. Pawan Goenka joins a prestigious list of 12 Chairmen who have preceded him.
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras commented on the appointment by saying, “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Pawan Goenka as the Chairman of the Board. An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Dr. Goenka is an internationally acknowledged scientist manager with several citations to his credit. A stalwart of the automobile industry, he has spearheaded various prestigious industry bodies and I am certain he will add tremendous value to this role as well”.
IIT Madras was the third IIT which was established by the Government of India through an Act of Parliament. This prestigious institute was inaugurated in 1959 by the Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. Spread over an area of 2.5 km² (620 acres) campus, it was formerly a part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. The institute helped by 550 faculties with 1,250 administrative and supporting staff teach more than 8,000 students.
Dr. Pawan Goenka said, “It is an honour and I am humbled to have been appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. I am looking forward to working with the Director of the Institute, Prof. Ramamurthi and the Board to contribute towards the Institute’s goals of building Scientific & Engineering excellence, incubating innovation and encouraging entrepreneurship. Going forward, I am banking on the support from the Board and active participation from the student & alumni fraternity for adding sheen to an institute with an already outstanding pedigree and reputation.”
