CarDekho has been constantly informing you about the soon to be launched Bajaj RE60, which was waiting for the government clearance. Finally, the Indian government has allowed quadricycles to run on roads as public transport within city limits. So, we could soon see RE60 running on the streets, overtaking the three-wheelers. Quadricycles are safer than the 3-wheeler autos, as they come with a fully covered body structure with hard top and doors. It looks similar to the small cars, but the maximum speed limit and engine capacity are lower.

Road Secretary Vijay Chhibberr had organised a meeting to discuss the inclusion of quadricycles to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) as a new category vehicle to be manufactured and registered in India. "A separate category has been proposed for notification to include quadricyle with specifications adopting present norms notified in the 3-wheeler category of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) or the European Union quadricycle, whichever is more stringent," a Road Ministry statement said.

This has been an excellent news for Bajaj India, which showcased the vehicle at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo and was waiting for the government clearance. The quadricycle is powered by a 200cc petrol engine, which has a top speed of 70kmph with a mileage of 35kmpl. Earlier, the quadricycles were recommended for registration under commercial transport category, which runs under the municipal limited.

"It is expected to be a substantial upgrade over the 3-wheeler auto which currently provides for the last mile connectivity in most urban areas of the country," the statement said. In the meeting, the Ministry of Heavy Industry, ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) and iCAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology) representatives were also present. "This is a wonderful day for Indian automotive innovation. The RE60 will soon be joined by many more similarly small, light and low speed vehicles that will make for a cleaner, safer, quieter world. As an anti-car company we are just delighted," Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj told PTI.
