Expert Review

Ashok Leyland Stile
Nissan Evalia
INTERIOR:
Ed's take:

The interiors of the Stile is spacious. Even the quality is decent. Being made on the Evalia platform, the Stile is very high on practicality with sliding doors and a low floor for loading.

The Ashok Leyland Stile is the same Evalia from inside. It gets beige colour instead of black, to give it a more premium feel. The overall plastic quality and the fit and finish is decent.  The small steering wheel and short gear knob make it easy and convenient to drive. There is plenty of space for your stowage for your 500ml bottles. The Stile also gets a lid on the glove box, unlike the Evalia.

The interior space is one of the biggest USP for the Stile too. The interiors are spacious and there is enough room in the first two rows. There is ample of space for your head and knees. The support for thigh isn’t sufficient in the second row. However, the third row is a tad tight on knee room, especially if you are a six-footer.  Even the boot can swallow good amount of luggage without flipping down the third row of seats. The low floor makes easy loading and ingress-egress for the aged. Also, when the seats are flipped, it forms a flat-bed. The Stile also gets sliding windows, than the butterfly that were criticized on the Evalia.

LE: This variant is available with 7 and 8 seater options and is the base model. It gets electric power steering, black bumpers, mirrors and door handles.

LS: LE is the mid-variant, and it gets body-coloured bumpers, dual-tone interiors, central locking, front row power windows. This variant is also available with seven and eight seater options.

LX: This is top of the line version, and it is fully loaded with body colour mirrors, fabric seats and even the option of alloy wheels.

The low floor makes easy loading and ingress-egress for the aged. Also, when the seats are flipped, it forms a flat bed. Now, the Evalia also gets the plug-in window on the sliding door, cover for the glove box and hand grip for the third row passengers.

XE: XE is the base model variant on the Evalia and it gets a 2DIN music system, ABS with EBD, Power steering and AC.

XE+: The XE model gets 4 speakers, door open warning and 2 airbags as extra features over the XE.

XL: The XL gets rear AC blowers, front power windows and keyless entry as extra over the XE+.

XL (O): The XL (O) variant gets captain seats in the second row.

XV: The XV is the top of the line version on the Evalia. It gets reverse parking camera and alloy wheels as extra over the XL version. The XV is the best variant to buy, as it costs merely Rs 50,000 more than XL. It is the only variant that gets alloy wheels and multi-function display.

XV (O): The only difference between the XV and the XV(O) is that it gets captain seats in the second row.

ENGINE:

The engine on the Stile doesn’t have that extra punch for quick overtakes, but is very much drivable and can be driven without any kind of stress in city or even on the highways. The gearbox is also short and easy to shift.

Nissan has plonked in a 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Stile too. This is the K9K that also propels the Sunny. This oil burner is one of the most fuel-efficient and highly refined mills from Renault. The noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels are fairly low. Crank the engine, and you will be astonished by its finesse. But the difference here is that the power has been reduced to 75bhp instead of the 85bhp on the Evalia.

The initial thought is that the engine seems to be underpowered. But all these are changed, once you get behind the steering wheel. The power delivery is linear and the engine pulls cleanly even from low revs. There is no struggle or hesitation from the engine, even when lugged into a higher cog. Another biggest USP of the Stile is its gearbox. The gear knob on its competition is tall and has loads of vibration. This has the same small knob, which makes shifts positive and the throws short. This is a five-speed simple shift stick that is easy to change.

RIDE AND HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS:

The ride on the Stile is very much sorted and even the handling isn’t bad. The best part of driving the Stile is that it feels like a sedan, and can be easily steered in tight lanes, despite its dimensions. The tires are also thicker on the Stile than the Evalia, though they are optional.

Stile is the only front-wheel drive vehicle— when compared to its competition— and the others are rear-wheel. The Stile is also the only one in its category to get single leaf spring suspension at its rear. The ride on the Stile has be smooth and composed, and it is. The ride suppleness is good as the suspension soaks up all the jolts and rides with well-damped compliance.

All due credit to the engineers in Nissan (as it was designed and tested by the Japanese manufacturer), who tweaked the suspension well to have minimal body roll despite the mammoth size. It can be pushed around bends and the vehicle will adhere to the road. On excess pushing, Stile can lose grip and go out of control. Being a large vehicle, it isn’t built for such purposes. The steering wheel is light and feels connected when manoeuvring through turns. At speeds in excess of 100kmph, the crosswinds affect the car and the force can be felt. Something similar can be felt, while overtaking trailers on the highway.
