Headquartered in Germany, the German luxury car manufacturer was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son. More than 100 years ago, Wilhelm Maybach built a car that heralded the modern era. His Opus No 1 went down in history as the first Mercedes, and he is still remembered as the 'king of the design engineers'. The name is associated with the most beautiful and distinguished vehicles ever to grace the road. However, the forties saw the end of the classic Maybach's era, and even though the production of these legendary vehicles had ended, they remained alive in the hearts and minds of their engineers, designers and automotive enthusiasts. Maybach cars then made a comeback in the 21st century. Like its esteemed predecessors, the new Maybach cars also set new standards with their technology, design and individuality. However, today, this ultra-luxury car brand is owned by Daimler AG.

In November 2011, Daimler announced that Maybach will cease to be a brand by 2013. This announcement is due to the poor sales figures of Maybach cars. Only sold 3,000 Maybach cars were sold since the brand's revival in 2002. The decision follows almost a decade of attempts to make Maybach a profitable rival to Rolls Royce and Bentley. It is reported that Maybach will be replaced by new and more luxurious models from the Mercedes-Benz brand, which is also made by Daimler.
