We are hearing for quite some time that Volvo is looking forward to extend its range of crossovers and when Swedish automaker showcased V40 cross country at last year Paris Motor Show, it again speeded expectations of coming up of new crossover under the moniker XC40. The forthcoming Volvo XC40 has certainly got underpinnings from its sibling V40. Instead of creating an SUV based on V40, it is strongly considering a compact crossover by adding skirts and off road capabilities to V40. The upcoming baby from Volvo could be an immediate answer to BMW X1 and Audi Q3. It has enough space to slot in above V40 and below XC60. Volvo V40 has been launched in different parts of the world and showing good sales numbers in the European executive class but as far as Indian sub-continent market is concerned, the new XC40 compact SUV could be a game changer.
Under the hood it is highly expected that XC40 will house-in constant engine line-up. It could get 1.6L and 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine and two turbocharged petrol engines. The petrol car fans can easily expect 150-240hp and the diesel one could generate anything around 150hp. It’s no wonder Volvo will associate 4WD capability to the new XC40 which is expected to be offered in top quality models to enhance off-road capability as well as counter other co-evals in the segment. The new Volvo XC40 is considered as high riding version of V40, so it will naturally adopt everything from design dynamics to engines and get tweaks here and there to make it appear as a brilliant compact SUV. The T5 engine can promise sprint time from 0-100 in just 6.7 seconds. The engine will definitely be coupled with manual and especially automatic transmission gearbox since there is increasing demand for this feature in Indian market.
In comparison to recently launched Volvo V40, the vehicle uses various protecting elements to the lower side and comes with front fascia designed dynamically in aluminum. There would be redesigned front bumpers and new fog lamps. The ride height would be slightly increased and the body will becladded inplastic with aluminum inflections. The exterior stance of the vehicle would be as impressive and jaw dropping as of V40 and would be capable of winning the hearts of Volvo lovers. The utmost aim of the Swedish automaker would be to enchant youngsters, so it is extremely important to have pre-eminent front and a heavy-handed rear appearance to synchronize with the front fascia. New alloy wheel design will undoubtedly enhance its sporty look.
In terms of interiors, the cabin would be as flashy as exteriors and well-constructed. The center console will be enough to attract tech-savvy people with latest smartphone and connectivity features like Bluetooth, USB, AUX-In, Ipod support. Apart from the plush interiors, Volvo XC40 will be blessed with state of the art safety features like driver and co-passenger airbags, knee airbags, anti-submarining protection as in V40, whiplash protection, hill descent control and hill holder system. There would be multiple mode driving options to ease the job while driving without compromising on performance. There would be parking assist technology and tons of other comfort features.
Volvo XC40 is still under development and will soon be launched on the global stage to beat the likes of other rivals. But however, it is certain that Volvo wants to move into new platform in the crossover segment since its own Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) is too big to brood something small like XC40. As far as India is concerned, the market has enough potential to lure Swedish manufacturer to launch this new car on Indian shores. But if launched in the Indian market, it would certainly bring German rivals on tenterhooks. As Volkswagen has already announced its Golf hatchback at the Paris Motor show, Volvo along with its parent company Geely will not remain as a silent spectator and will certainly try its hands on a new platform that will spawn a new crossover. It is clear that with the launch of wide range of cars, Volvo is preparing to expand its base in India and want to play a major role in the luxury market by the end of this decade.
