Hyundai Motors had recently gathered lot of media attention with the launch of Grand i10 in India. It seems like the company doesn't need to rest, and now again it is gearing up to present a sub-4 meter sedan to the Indian market. This compact sedan/sub-4 meter car is developed based on grand i10 platform (BA). Recent times have observed the compact sedan segment expanding at fast pace in the local market, which could be the reason for Hyundai to bring its own contender. The segment originated with the automakers escaping from tax hike situation has now turned as the booming car segment in India. As of the facts are concerned, this particular car segment has received maximum response.
As per the official sources of the company, the wait for the Grand i10 based sedan model has been declared up till April 2014. The Hyundai compact sedan will lock horns with few segment leading models like, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and Tata Indigo eCS. The notchback, with differently designed front facade, is positioned to fill the gap created by discontinuing company's flagship sedan model i.e. Hyundai Accent. So, this sedan will be placed exactly below the Hyundai Fluidic Verna.
Looking at the exteriors of the compact sedan, it largely resembles to its hatchback version upto the B-Pillar. The rear will definitely be different in that sense to make it look completely different than Grand i10. It is definite that this compact sedan will show up with petrol and turbodiesel options, but it is not sure that if the compact sedan will be made available with LPG/CNG options. Since Grand i10 sports generous levels of features, the same could be expected with this compact sedan model. Looking at the competition, this compact sedan should appear with advanced safety features comprising of twin airbags, Anti-Braking System combined with electronic brake distribution as standard on all top-variants.
As far as mechanical specs are concerned, as it is based on Grand i10 hatch, it will house both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol variant will show up with 1.2-liter Kappa Dual VTVT (variable timing valve train), which has the ability to churn maximum power output of 82bhp at 6000rpm and 114Nm of peak torque at 4000rpm. The petrol engine model will arrive with both five-speed manual transmission gearbox and 4-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the diesel variant will feature 1.4-liter CRDi engine, which is capable to belt out a maximum power output of 70bhp at 4000rpm and 160Nm of top torque at 2750rpm. While this diesel engine model will be looked forward with the launch of the compact sedan.
Looking at the positioning of the vehicle, the grandi10 based sedan is surely expected with generous level of features bound to it. The major change would be the presence of boot at the rear, which actually be one of the distinguishable element to identify it as the compact/sub-4 meter sedan. With this, there will be plenty of space created at the rear seats offering better legroom and headroom. The sedan will feature comfortable seating arrangement for five passengers.
Few features which could be part of the upcoming Grand i10 based sedan include, central locking, reverse parking sensors, rear defogger, 2-DIN integrated audio system with USB, with 1 GB internal memory, Aux-In, Bluetooth connectivity. Moreover, it can house various comfort features like map pocket, glove box, floor console storage, power windows, luggage lamp, seat back pocket, center console storage and many such others. The steering wheel will house audio controls. As the grand i10's top variant is rich in comfort features, the same can be transcended this compact sedan which is based on the same hatch. Few more such features of Grand i10 hatch include, rear AC vent, smart key with start/stop push button, electric mirror, height adjustable driver seat, tilt steering and cooled glove box. The mileage figures will be such that this sedan could easily be placed as stronger contender against segment leaders like Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze. And the pricing again will strategically done to place the sedan well in the market. All these factors will matter the success of the first sub-4 meter sedan from Hyundai India.
