Beetle, the new generation of the storied car, would clearly not compete with Nano on price. It will cost 20 times more, thanks to the high duty (113%) on imported cars.
Volkswagen has decided to go diesel with Beetle. The car will be available in 1.9 litre TDI diesel variant as early as April-May this year. The bells and whistles on the Bug would include rain sensors and cruise control, along with acoustic rear parking sensors to fit into small parking spaces.
Safety features will include ABS, traction control, anti-skid system and front and side airbags. Beetle will be powered by a manual transmission.“Very soon we will introduce Beetle in India. It will be a completely built unit (CBU) from Germany.
As we don’t want to clutter the market with different options, we will offer only one diesel trim for the Indian market,” Volkswagen managing director Andreas Prinz told ET.Beetle will be different from Nano on more counts than the price alone. It will have a conventional front engine.
